SNAC has upgraded the winter service shop at our Arnold store with new Reichmann tuning machines. We are pleased to offer our customers ski and snowboard tunes, base grinds, custom edge beveling and hand iron waxing. Also new this year for our customers heading up the hill to Bear Valley will be our ability to wax while you wait.

The question we get asked a lot, especially from our beginner skier/boarding customers is “Why do I need to wax, I’m not interested in going fast?” A waxed base is 30% easier to turn, more durable and has better glide. A properly waxed base will make you a better rider, allow better control, and reduce frequent trips to the shop to remove base burn.

All modern ski/snowboard bases need waxing on a regular basis. There is a myth that “Extruded” (used on less expensive skis and snowboards) bases do not need waxing. Extruded bases do not absorb as much wax as their sintered base counterparts, but nevertheless they do need regular maintenance. Think of waxing like changing the oil on your car. Wax is a lubricant that protects the base from abrasion by the snow. Wax also helps control the amount of water that you are sliding on. Too much water and your ski sticks to the snow (spring conditions). Not enough water and it is like sliding on sand. Wax also helps you glide smoothly through snow transitions, this keeps you from “flying over the handlebars” when you go from shade to sun.

Besides waxing, it is important that your edges are sharp and bases free of damage. Having your edges sharpened at the correct bevel and deburred will keep your turns smooth and keep you in control. Base grinding helps to put the correct structure back into the base and will improve your glide and keep your skis/board running true.
